Actors Turned Musicians

Gwyneth Paltrow goes country. Listen.

Gwyneth Paltrow I know a lot of people HATE this woman and can't figure out who she thinks she is with what everyone refers to as her weird snootiness and apparently she says things like "There's no excuse for not losing your baby weight," which makes some of my friends see red. And everyone points to her GOOP website as an example of her sheer jerkiness because she posts things like $5000 cargo pants and calls them the "coolest thing ever."

But I actually think she seems fun and sweet, and if she can afford $5000 pants and baby weight loss fairies (or however that's done) good for her.

So, I'm happy to report that Gwynnie's foray into country music isn't terrible (it's not her first singing gig. See also: Duets with Huey Lewis). She recorded this track for the movie Country Strong, scheduled to hit theatres in December, and it's being released as a single. MTV says Gwynnie plays a washed up country singer trying to resurrect her career with the help of her husband (Tim McGraw), an up-and-coming songwriter (Garrett Hedlund of "Tron: Legacy" fame) and a fresh new face on the country scene (Leighton Meester).

Bratpacker Molly Ringwald sings on jazz album

Getty Images Former Bratpacker Molly Ringwald is singing on a jazz record. This will be very interesting to anyone old enough to remember the Brat Pack, a group that includes me. When I was about 13 I wanted to BE Molly Ringwald.

Molly Ringwald, one of the biggest actresses of the 80s (The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles) basically gave hope to all the quirky outcast girls that we too would eventually get the hot boy, and that was so important back then because the hope of getting the hot boy is what gets you through the day when you're 13 years old. Or, at least, it was for me. Maybe I was just kind of a pathetic teenager.

Then she grew up and, along with several other Brat Pack members, pretty much disappeared. Or so I thought. Really, she was doing things like performing on Broadway in Cabaret and Sweet Charity.

Then she resurfaced on ABC Family's The Secret Life of the American Teenager, which I have never watched because I am not interested in the lives of American Teenagers, secret or otherwise.

Scarlett Johansson's new single

Getty Images We were all a bit surprised and sceptical when Scarlett Johansson released her album of Tom Waits cover tunes last year. And the album itself, which received very mixed reviews, failed to prove anything one way or the other. It was OK. Then we pretty much forgot about it – Billboard says according to Nielsen Soundscan, it's only sold 19, 000 copies. Ouch.

Well, it turns out Anywhere I Lay My Head wasn't Scarjo's first album recording. Three years ago She laid down a series of duets with singer/songwriter Pete Yorn. And now the pair are releasing the sessions to the world, titled Break Up, on June 9.
